Conveniently located just 12 miles southeast of Los Angeles, Whittier is a growing and diverse community that has a lot to offer to its residents. Whittier was incorporated in 1898 and is the twelfth oldest city in Los Angeles County. In 1887 after the Pickering Land & Water Company´s board designated 20 acres as the site for the college, the preeminent school was built. It is nationally recognized for its liberal arts curriculum and its innovative interdisciplinary programs. Education is a priority in Whittier and this is seen in the testing results of the city´s students who consistently test in the top percentiles compared to other California school districts.

With the revival of its Uptown district, Whittier offers more than 200 unique shopping venues and other businesses for its residents and visitors to enjoy. The area also offers many professional services to take advantage of such as medical practices and attorney offices. This is a city with a distinct Latino flavor and residents and visitors enjoy the many Mexican eateries and shops that sell unique artistic Aztec souvenirs. From shopping for vintage clothing and antique trinkets to going to the movies or hearing live music at a number of hot spots, residents of Whittier need not ask for more. Uptown Whittier is truly a fun place to visit. Aside from its unique shopping district, the distinguished Whittier College, and pleasant neighborhoods, Whittier has found its place in the movies as well. A number of movies and television shows have been taped in the city, including Back to the Future, Back to the Future Part II, Hocus Pocus, Father of the Bride Part II, Matilda, Bringing Down the House, Masters of the Universe, and Ali. Among Whittier´s population of around 95,000, there are also a number of actors and actresses who call the city home, including Joy Enriquez, Stacy Ferguson, Kathy Hilton, Roger Lodge, Lorna Patterson, Eric Stoltz, and Tina Yothers.
